The Governor's Reception Room is adorned with four large murals by Gari Melchers dedicated to the theme of education in Missouri. Susan Elizabeth Blow, who was born in St. Louis in 1843, studied the education methods of Germany's Froebel and later formed those theories into practical applications with the establishment in St. Louis of a school for training kindergarten teachers. Through her writings and lectures she promoted the kindergarten system and is looked upon as "The Mother of the Kindergarten." She is seen standing in a kindergarten classroom flanked by two little girls. The words "FROEBEL" and "Let us live for the Children" appear on the wall behind her.
