    1765.
    Medium:

    36 x 50 1/4 in. (91.4 x 127.6 cm).

    Description:
Scene depicting Benjamin West standing to the left, holding a palette and brushes, as he instructs a group of four young American painters seated around a table in West's elegant London home. A bust of a young boy rests on the table along with piles of sketches. To the right, one figure holding a palette and paint brush has just begun to work on a painting that is propped up on an easel in front of the table. Although Matthew Pratt's signature appears on the lower left the painting on the easel, Pratt is actually thought to be the figure seated on the left next to West, showing him a sketch on blue paper. The figure seated at the easel, as well as the two figures seated at the back of the table, are unidentified.
