    Description:
In this mural, one of four by Miller in the Senate Chamber, Senator Thomas Hart Benton is seen standing inside the St. Louis Court House on Oct. 17, 1849, just after delivering a speech extolling the virtues of extending the railroad westward from St. Louis to the Pacific. His hands are resting on the rail of the speaker's platform, and his eyes are surveying the audience. Seated around him are many famous faces including. Mayor John M. Krum and Stephen Douglas are seated behind Benton. To the right of Benton there are: Isaac H. Sturgeon (wearing tall hat), the first president of the North Missouri Railroad or Wabash; Thomas Allen (with long side whiskers), the second president of the Pacific Railroad; John O'Fallon, the first president of the Pacific Railroad; and Trusten Polk (with arms folded), later governor and U.S. senator from Missouri. To the left of Benton there are two men examining the subscription list, which totaled $200,000 at this time.
