An interior scene of a monk standing in the Uffizi Gallery, his attention directed toward Titian's painting of the reclining nude "Venus of Urbino." Behind him is a painting depicting a cardinal, who appears to be looking down upon the scene.

National Academy of Design Forty Eighth Annual Exhibition, National Academy of Design, New York, 1873, (no. 108).

When the painting was exhibited at the National Academy's 1873 annual exhibition it was titled "The monk." Later the artist sent a note to the National Academy and referred to the painting as "A Connoisseur."
