Description:
The Governor's Reception Room is adorned with four large murals by Gari Melchers dedicated to the theme of education in Missouri. James Rollins, who earned the rank of major during the Black Hawk War of 1832 and was elected to the state legislature in 1838, was largely responsible for establishing the University of Missouri at Columbia. He is seen standing under a portico with the University of Missouri (1840) in the background. Rollins is dressed in formal attire and holds a copy of the charter of the University of Missouri in his hand as he is about to give the inaugural address.
