Located Ohio River Boulevard near Charles Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Remarks:
Originally, twelve pylons carved with reliefs illustrating the early history of the area were paired at the entrances to city and county boulevards. Now only two pairs of pylons remain, one pair is located on Allegheny River Boulevard (IAS record 64480192) and one pair is located on Ohio River Boulevard (IAS record PA001172). A single pylon still stands at Saw Mill Run Boulevard & Warrington Avenue; its companion was destroyed by a runaway vehicle in 1979. A fragment of a sixth relief carving, rescued from a construction project, is installed in the sculpture court of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, now the Children's Museum (IAS record PA000244). IAS files contain an excerpt from Marilyn Evert's "Discovering Pittsburgh's Sculpture," Pittsburgh, PA: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1983, pg. 357.
