Inscription:  (Back lower right:) JMEB (On front of base, incised lettering:) 1789 ELIZABETH CELEBRATES WASHINGTONS BICENTENNIAL 1989/George Washington journeyed to "Elizabethtown"--met with a Committee of the Continental Congress in Boxwood Hall--sailed from Elizabethport-April 23, 1789 (On back of base:) Recipient of the international public relations association's "Golden World Awards of Excellence" Description:  A black granite sculpture in the shape of a boat, with gray incising showing scenes of George Washington's travels to his inaugural in "Elizabethtown" New Jersey in 1789. On the left is Washington in silhouette, standing before a light gray banner depicting a small horse and carriage, commemorating his ride into Elizabethtown. In the banner's background is Boxwood Hall, where he met with the Centennial Congress. At the right is Washington standing in a manned rowboat as it sails out of Elizabethport to New York. The sculpture is mounted on a rectangular base. The memorial is enclosed within a metal fence.
