Remarks:
The sculptural detail is from the bow ornament of the armored cruiser "Pittsburgh" built in 1899. The ship was part of the Great White Fleet, which, upon its return in 1909, was painted "battleship gray" along with other navy vessels. The navy, believing the ornamentation was no longer suitable, offered the bow ornaments to cities and organizations associated with the warships. In 1914, the artist asked for the bronze scrollwork and had a concrete ram-shaped prow built for it at the foot of the Hamerschlag building.
