    Description: 
    An extended sculptural environment which reflects spiritual, patriotic, and personal values of the artists. Images include stars and hearts, a fanciful American flag, a giant reproduction of the Wegners' fiftieth anniversary cake,, and a 12 foot concrete facsimile of the 1930s Breman ocean liner which brought the artists from Germany. Also included is a Prayer Garden, Glass Church and Peace Monument.

    Located Wegner Grotto County Park, 1/4 mile west of the intersection of Highways 27 & 71, Sparta, Wisconsin
    Remarks: 
    The artists began building the grotto at their farm home after their retirement in 1929. Work on the piece continued until the artist's deaths. In 1986, the Kohler Foundation acquired the site and began restoration of the art environment. In 1987, the site was given to Monroe County. IAS files contain a brochure "Paul and Matilda Wegner Grotto," n.d. and additional information on the art works.
