Description:
The sculpture depicts horsewoman Mary Gaylord, dressed in traditional riding attire, astride her twelve-time world champion horse, Santana Lass. The horse raises its proper left front and proper right rear legs and holds its head erect, tail extended. The sculpture rests directly on the ground, but is mounted to an underground foundation composed of an I-beam and concrete. The sculpture is backed by evergreens and flanked by shrubs, plants and flowers.

Remarks:
Santana Lass, who died in 1996 at the age of fourteen, was an American Saddlebred Five Gaited World Champion. The $100,000 sculpture was donated by Mary Gaylord's father, Edward Gaylord, owner of Opryland and Gaylord Entertainment. David Julious of Walnut Ridge Nursery was the landscape architect for the sculpture project. Nearby plaque reads: SANTANA LASS WORLD CHAMPION RIDDEN BY MARY GAYLORD TRAINED BY REDD CRABTREE SCULPTURE BY GWEN REARDON DEDICATED TO THE CITIZENS AND HORSEMEN OF SHELBYVILLE AND SHELBY COUNTY JULY 30, 1997.
