Depicts the finish of the Stallion Stakes race at Churchill Downs on Sept. 17, 1886, with winner Ed "Snapper" Garrison riding Jim Gray. The crowd stands behind a picket fence on both sides of the track.

Owner reports that according to unconfirmed records this painting was exhibited at the National Academy of Art in New York from 1892 until 1896. It was purchased by Erra Puntillo and used as decoration in a pub until 1975. In 1979 it was purchased by Norman Casse who gave it to the Kentucky Derby Museum in 1984.
