    Formerly located Hoppin House, 383 Benefit Street, Providence, Rhode Island 1851-1896.
    Remarks: 
    Gift to the City of Providence in 1896. Previously owned by Hoppin House in Providence. After its presentation to the city, it was located in different places within Roger Williams Park, including Frederick C. Green Memorial Boulevard and the Japanese Gardens. Reportedly one of the first large scale bronze sculptures cast in the United States. This piece honors Black Prince, a dog whose barking once saved the lives of several members of the Hoppin family in 1849. It has been awarded the Gold Medal from the New York Academy of Design and has been shown at the Crystal Palace in London. IAS files include a citation to an article from "Rhode Island History," Fall 1993, pg. 123-132.
