24 pieces. Each piece: approx. H. 15 3/5 in.
Description:
Three pairs of double doors with each door divided into four square panels, and each square panel containing a gilded bronze depiction of a biological specimen in a circular iron frame. The subjects are represented as seen through either a magnifying glass or a microscope, depending on the size of the specimen. On the left doors are specimens found in the sea, on the center doors are specimens found in the air, and on the right doors are specimens found on the earth.
The specimens represented on the left doors are: Skeleton Radiolaria, Ophiure Flagellata (Flat Brittle Starfish), Glaucilla Marginate (Marine Mollusk), Crab, Pyenogonum Littorale (Sea Spider), Trilobite, Pelagia Nataluca (Jellyfish), and Sepia Rondeleti (Squid).
The specimens represented on the center doors are: Praying Mantis, Wasp, Queen Ant, Beetle, Spider, Ichneumon Fly, Bee, and Butterfly.
The specimens represented on the right door are: Ginkgo Biloba, Heracleum Lenatum (Cow Parsnip Flower), Follicles of Pterocymbium (Adapted to Wind Dispersal), Fruit of Carex Verrucosa (Warty Sedge Family--Cyperacae), Dulichium Arundenaceum, Spikelet of Agrostis Hyemalis (Rough Hair Grass), Mushrooms, and Fucus Vesiculosus (Sea Weed).
