Remarks:
The twelve small reliefs were moved from the inside of the Bird Building to the outside in 1983-1984. IAS files contain an article from the Cleveland Zoological Society's Zoo News (Summer 1992): pg. 14-15. The Bird Building was designed by architect J. Byers Hays of Conrad, Hays, Simpson and Ruth. The clay models for the reliefs were fabricated at the studios of Fillous and Ruppel in Cleveland and then sent to Mathiason Brothers in New Jersey for the firing. Schreckengost obtained his clay from the Federal Seaboard Terra Cotta Company of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, suppliers of clay for the tiles in New York's Holland Tunnel, because the artist discovered that the tiles in the Holland Tunnel had demonstrated the clay's ability to withstand the rigors of exhaust, weather, vibrations, and time.
