    Remarks:
Inscription on nearby plaque reads: VOLUNTEERS/STEVEN WEITZMAN/WILLOW OAK/1990 THIS SCULPTURE HONORS THE MANY VOLUNTEERS SERVING THE NATIONAL ZOO AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION. THE FRIENDS OF THE NATIONAL ZOO (FONZ) AND THE NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL PARK COMMISSIONED SCULPTOR STEVEN WEITZMAN TO CARVE THIS FALLEN WILLOW OAK AT THE ZOO. HIS WORK-IN-PROGRESS BECAME A POPULAR ATTRACTION FROM 1988 TO ITS COMPLETION IN 1990.
The sculptor removed six tons of wood and spent more than 2,000 hours to create the piece. He started with a chain saw to rough out the general shape and then used chisels and gouges from his collection of 100 which range in size from 80 mm to 2 mm. He smoothed the surface with sandpaper and sealed it with Cuprinol and several coats of polyurethane.
Sculpture cost $20,000 and was commissioned by the Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ). Sculpture was carved in the Zoo from a dead, 100-year-old white oak. The sculptor worked on the tree in the Zoo, near the Reptile House. The piece was later moved to its present site across from the Education Building. Sculpture was originally signed by the artist, but the signature was removed during some repair work by the artist. IAS files contain a 1988 cataloging sheet from the National Zoological Park which notes that the sculpture is carved from white oak and is untitled. IAS files contain a letter from the artist to the zoo director, Michael Robinson and an article from Woodshop News (October 1990): pg. T22-T23, which discusses how the artist came to carve some of the figures and includes photographs of the sculpture in progress.
