Washington Monument Commemorative Stone: Turkey, (sculpture). Artist:  Unknown, sculptor. Title:  Washington Monument Commemorative Stone: Turkey, (sculpture). Dates:  1854. Installed 1885. Inscription:  (Carved in relief, in Turkish, translated:) SO AS TO STRENGTHEN THE FRIENDSHHIP BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. ABDUL-MEJID KAHN HAS ALSO HAD HIS NAME WRITTEN ON THE MONUMENT TO WASHINGTON. Description:  The stone is carved in relief with an elaborate design featuring architectural elements surrounding an oval with a low relief image of an olive branch and a plow. Below the there is a rectangle containing an inscription in Turkish carved in relief. Subject:  Allegory -- Place -- Turkey Architecture -- Detail Object -- Tool -- Plow Object -- Foliage -- Olive Branch Object Type:  Relief Sculpture Owner:  Administered by United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Washington, District of Columbia Located National Mall, Adjacent to 14th Street, between Constitution Avenue, N.W. & Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington, District of Columbia Remarks:  One of 193 commemorative stones set into the interior walls of the Washington Monument. The stones were donated by states, cities, towns, organizations, individuals, and foreign countries in honor of George Washington. Turkey donated the stone, which is located at the 190 ft. level.
