    Remarks:
Erected in 1960 as a testimony to Pan-American friendship and unity. After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the monument was rededicated in his memory. At times, the monument has been damaged by people protesting any possible detente between the U.S. and Fidel Castro. After serious damage in 1974, Valerio Capote rebuilt the monument at no charge. The perpetual flame has been extinguished occasionally to conserve fuel.
