The sculpture was created in 1974 as part of the Erie Summer Festival of the Arts, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, Pennsylvania Council for the Arts, and the Erie Flexlume Co., Inc. According to the artist, the sculpture was inspired by the Erie downtown redevelopment and symbolizes the past and future faces of Erie, Pennsylvania. It was exhibited at the Marine Bank's main office in Erie in 1974 while the Erie Transitway Mall was being completed. It was then loaned to the Erie Art Center until the Center moved and became the Erie Art Museum in 1983. In 1984, it was installed at its current site. IAS files contain the artist's flyer for the sculpture which includes the artist's statement.
