Eight upright monoliths carved in relief with images of prominent Kansans and images related to the history of Kansas. Also depicted is a landscape with turkey, stream and fish, lightning bolt, rain and rainbow; a scene with a church, wheat stalks, wagon wheel, cowboy hat and long-handled shovel; and a figure with two outstretched arms and the impressions of a head and neck, and other geometric carvings. The monoliths are arranged roughly in a circle, with six forming the outer perimeter and two in the inside. They are placed on an elliptical-shaped earth embankment.

Remarks:
The sculpture was fabricated for the 1992 Kansas Sculpture Association Stone Symposium. The artist was assisted by landscape architect Dave Emig and student intern, Bob Hillman. Brendy Stauffer, the artist's daughter, and Emporia State University student Scott Schmidt assisted with the carving. Others assisted with the sculpture's fabrication. The theme of the sculpture is prairie passage and symbolizes Emporia as the gateway to the Kansas Flint Hills, and the city's transition from past to present. William Allen White was the former editor and publisher of The Gazette; General Nathaniel Lyon, for whom the county is named, fought in the Civil War; and Preston B. Plumb founded Emporia, Kansas.
At the time of the SOS! survey, July 1994, the sculpture was still in progress. IAS files contain detailed dimensions and related article from The Emporia Gazette, Aug. 22-23, 1992, pg. 1, 7. IAS files also contain a press release dated Aug. 10, 1992; and a flyer announcing the 1992 Kansas Sculptors Association Stone Symposium.
