The eagles are the official symbols of the University. The motto at the bottom of the medallion of the north column "Ut Omnes Te Cognoscant" (John 13, 3) expresses the purpose of a Niagara education: "That All May Know You." The inscription on Christ's halo on the medallion of the south column, "Evangelizare Pauperibus Misit Me," is the official motto of the Vincentian Fathers who sponsor the University, and is translated as "He sent me to preach the good news to the poor."
