    Artist:
    Haggerty, Thomas A., 1961- , sculptor.
    Title:
    Builder, (sculpture).
    Dates:
    Sept. 1986.
    Medium:
Plywood, concrete and discarded building materials, including slate, wire mesh, wire cable, pulley, stone, steel, plastic tubing and fiber.
    Dimensions:
    Approx. 10 x 16 x 7 ft.
    Inscription:
    unsigned
    Description:
An abstract wall relief made of discarded building materials which are bolted or wired to a plywood wall and stuccoed with concrete. The elements are placed in such a way to suggest that the building materials themselves are constructing the relief. The relief is intended to be an allegorical portrait of builder and engineer James J. Haggerty.
On the left side, pieces of broken slate are caged by a rectangular box of wire mesh. Attached to the cage is a wire cable which passes through a pulley and beyond the relief format to a "maverick" element located overhead. It consists of entrapped stone that insists on escaping the wall relief. The cable passes through an overhead pulley and travels back to the wall relief and through several other pulleys. Much of the right side of the relief consists of fragments of steel and stone that seem to be emerging from the wall. On the left side of the relief, around the mesh cage element, plastic tubing appears to be sinking in and emerging from the wall.
