Description:
An irregularly-shaped, five-sided, building-like sculpture with brick walls or "faces", outlined in wood planes and topped by wood shingles. The faces each contain various figures, writings, and scenes in low-relief from American history and culture. Southeast face: entitled "Sons of Freedom" on the top, includes, profile busts of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin bordered on the right by a semicircle of thirteen stars. Beyond the stars on the right is a male figure holding a rifle and below him, a profile bust of Abraham Lincoln. Below Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant sits in uniform on a horse, wearing a hat, tie, and lapelled jacket, with a sword by his side. On the southeast face is a profile bust of an Indian chief, with a buffalo below him, and a profile bust of General Robert E. Lee in uniform, the GOP elephant, and two soldiers, possibly from the Civil War, loading a cannon. Also included on the southeast face are a sailing ship, a pioneer, the Democratic Party donkey, and busts of John Brown and Stonewall Jackson. The southwest face includes various scenes from childhood, including two children in overalls holding hands, and a toddler bending over in a diaper. Above them a man holds up a child, and another waist-length figure of a male is above them. Towards the top, a child touches a decorated Christmas tree.
Included on the north and northwest faces are profile busts of Robert F. Kennedy and President John F. Kennedy. To the left of Robert Kennedy stands young John F. Kennedy, Jr., as a child, saluting in the famous pose that he struck when his father's casket passed by him in November, 1963. To the left is a waist-length profile relief of an elderly woman with a hat, perhaps Rosa Parks. Below her is a waist-length adult male in profile playing a trumpet, perhaps a recreation of the famous photograph of the trumpeter playing during President Roosevelt's funeral in 1945. Below him is a bust of President Harry S. Truman in a recreation of the famous photograph taken after the 1948 Presidential election, holding up a newspaper that incorrectly stated that he had been defeated. At the right is a bust of a soldier wearing a helmet, with, perhaps, the map of a country below him, with an inscription on it. The sculpture is located on a square, brick terrace, surrounded by a fence on two sides.
