    Description: 
    Monument consists of a tall, tapered shaft on a tiered, rough-hewn base. A uniformed color bearer stands atop the shaft, with the flag on its pole crooked in his proper left arm. Four uniformed male figures, each representative of different branches of the Armed Forces, stand at the base of the shaft, one on each side. They are an infantryman, an artilleryman, a cavalryman and a sailor.

    The cost of the monument was $6,000 or $8,000, of which the County contributed $3,000, the Grand Army of the Republic and Auxiliaries contributed $2,100 and the balance was made up by public subscription. IAS files contain excerpts from "Penn Yan, New York," by Walter Wolcott (Penn Yan, NY: Peerless Printing Co., 1913) and from the Shepard Scrapbooks, Oliver House Museum, Penn Yan, NY, 1907.
