Albert Szent-Gyorgyi was born on Sept. 16, 1893 in Budapest, Hungary where he studied medicine at the Budapest Medical School. He later completed his PhD in biochemistry at Cambridge University. In 1937, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Albert Szent-Györgyi "for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion processes, with special reference to vitamin C and the catalysis of fumaric acid." In 1947, he came to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts where he opened a laboratory in the Institution's Marine Biological Laboratory. He later became the director of the Institute of Muscle Research.
