The statue commemorates Will Powers, a fifth-grader at Wickliffe, killed in an automobile accident in 1991. Powers had worked with wildlife biologist and children's book author Ron Hirschi. Following Powers' death, the Will Powers Environmental Fund was established by his mother, Irene Lariviere, to continue the work that was begun by Powers and his fellow students. The sculpture marks the start of "The Trail of Dreams", a scientific nature trail from the school to the Scioto River. The wolf is also the mascot for the school.
