    Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of Clay, Cassius Marcellus, White Hall, Richmond, Kentucky
    Remarks:
The sculpture formerly belonged to political figure and abolitionist Cassius M. Clay (1810-1903), and was located outside on the lawn of his estate, White Hall, now known as White Hall State Shrine. Sculpture was one of four statues representing the seasons that stood on millstones at each corner of the house. Of the four, Winter is the only sculpture that remains at White Hall. The sculpture does not appear to be on its original base. IAS files contain excerpt from Carolyn Lee Siegel's "White Hall, The Clay Estate," Richmond, KY: Dragon's Lair, 1985, pg. 73, 76.
