Provenance:
Formerly located Western Kentucky State Teachers College, Entrance to Cherry Hall on 15th Street, Bowling Green, Kentucky
Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates Henry Hardin Cherry (1864-1937), a teacher who became President of Southern Normal School, 1892-1906, and Western Kentucky State Teachers College, 1906-1937, predecessors of Western Kentucky University. At the time of the dedication, the University was known as Western Kentucky State Teachers College. The project was conceived by friends of Cherry's, who developed it for three years without his knowledge, beginning in the late 1920s. Cherry did not want the sculpture erected during his lifetime. The sculpture cost $10,000, raised through contributions from faculty, friends, and citizens of Bowling Green. The names of the donors, and other records, are buried in a copper box beneath the base. The head was sculpted by Lorenzo Taft, who was a friend of Cherry's; the rest of the sculpture was done by Taft's understudies, including Mary Webster. Taft died soon after the completion of the model, before the sculpture was installed. Landscape architect Henry W. Wright selected the location for the sculpture. The sculpture was dedicated after Cherry's death, on his birthday.
