    Owner:
Washington Irving High School, 40 Irving Place at East 17th Street, New York, New York
    Provenance:
Formerly located Bryant Park, New York, New York until ca. 1935.
    Remarks:
Irving (1783-1859) was known for his short stories and histories including his early burlesque "Knickerbocker's History of New York," of 1809 and his famous "Rip Van Winkle," and "Legend of Sleepy Hollow," both of 1820. This bust was given to the City of New York by a German physician and admirer of the writer, Dr. Joseph Wiener. The bust was originally intended for Central Park, but after the park commissioners consulted with the Art Committee whose memebers were unsure of the faithfulness of the portrait, the bust was installed in Bryant Park. When Bryant Park was totally redesigned 50 years later, Irving's bust relocated to Washington Irving High School. Gayle and Cohen publication contains a ca. 1905 image of the bust in its Bryant Park location on a different base which has the inscription: WASHINGTON/IRVING/BORN 1783 - DIED 1859 on the front. The SOS volunteer surveyor indicated that the City of New York's Board of Education might be the administrator of the piece. For related articles on the sculpture see: Saltus, J. Sanford, and Walter E. Tisne, "Statues of New York," Putnam's Sons, 1923; and Fried, Frederick, "New York Civic Sculpture,A Pictorial Guide," New York: Dover Publications, 1976.
