    Remarks:
Spearheaded by husband and wife team, Ward & Maroney, the sculpture was developed as part of Re-Wing the City of Angels, a summer youth arts program, set up in response to the Los Angeles riots in 1992. 30 Los Angeles Conservation Corps youth helped to complete the serpent sculpture. Partial funding ($3,000) was provided by the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department. The work was "erected" in what was then an abandoned lot and was created largely of recycled materials, including river rock, colorful bits of tile, and semi-precious stones cemented to the serpent's back. Ward chose the serpent symbol because it represents fertility, a common symbol used in American Indian culture. The park and surrounding areas are ancient Shoshone-Gabrielino Indians ceremonial burial grounds.
IAS files contain newsclippings from the Los Angeles Times dated Oct. 15, 1992, and Feb. 11, 1993.
