A. Barret, N. Orleans (On front:) To the memory of the Confederate Dead of Walton County Florida. Erected by the Ladies of the Walton County Female Memorial Association, 1871. (On back:) When the Sprit free deserts the body as it must/What matters where the lifeless form dissolves itself again to dust/'Twere sweet indeed to close our eyes with those we cherish near/And wafted upward by their sighs, soar to some calmer sphere./But whether on the scaffold high or in the battle van/The fittest place where're man can die is where he dies for man. (On the right side are listed 54 names) (On the left side are listed Florida Volunteers and 32 names) signed
Description:
A human hand, index finger pointing skyward, surmounts a white marble shaft. On the front of the shaft, near the bottom, is a bas-relief of crossed cannon. One of the cannon is draped with a flag. The sculpture stands on a three stepped concrete base.

Nearby plaque: "Florida's First Confederate Monument. Shortly after the Civil War the women of Walton County organized a 'Ladies' Memorial Association with Jeanette I. McKinnon as president to erect a marble monument honoring Walton County's Confederate dead. The Association raised $250 and the monument was first erected in 1871 at Valley Church. It was moved to Euchee Anna the county seat, and then to DeFuniak Springs when it became the county seat. Florida Board of Parks & Historic Memorials ref. F-147." IAS files contain copy of related excerpt from John L. McKinnon's "History of Walton County", Atlanta: The Byrd Printing Company, 1911, pg. 373-379.
