Remarks:
James Bailey Upham, editor of Youth's Companion magazine, originated the Pledge of Allegiance, though he did not get credit for it. He published it anonymously in Youth's Companion magazine. IAP files contain a printout with an image of the portrait. The portrait was painted from a phptograph taken around the turn of the century. The painting was formerly incorrectly identifed as a portrait of Phineas Upham.
