    Description: 
    Two related bas-reliefs in bronze. One is a medallion, the other, a figurative relief. The medallion is a waist-length portrait of James Fenimore Cooper. He is holding a quill pen in his proper right hand. The figurative relief is set just below the medallion and features full-length portraits of two of Cooper's literary characters. On the proper right is Natty Bumpo, dressed in buckskin and cap. He is kneeling beside a canoe, and holds a rifle in his proper left hand. Facing him, on the proper left, is Chingachgook. He kneels on the other side of the canoe and holds a tomahawk.

    Remarks: 
    Sculpture hangs on the south wall of the post office foyer. It originally hung on the east wall, but was moved when the ceiling was lowered. IAS files contain copy of related article from the Freeman's Journal (Cooperstown, N.Y.), Aug. 12, 1936; excerpt from Marlene Park and Gerald Markowitz's "New Deal for Art," (Hamilton, NY: Gallery Association of New York State, 1977, pg. 135).
