Remarks:
Tyler High School was founded in 1882, and changed its name to John Tyler High School in 1965. On February 14, 1981 the school was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and rededicated on September 12, 1982. The sculpture was meant to symbolize the pride of the lions and the pride of John Tyler High School. The bricks used for the base are from the old Tyler High School, the John Tyler High School and the reconstructed high school. The Memorial Courtyard was designed by W. W. Newton.
