Remarks:
Inscription was written by Hemingway in 1939 for his friend Eugene Van Guilder who was killed in a hunting accident in southern Idaho that year. Sculpture was donated by New York friends. Hemingway, himself, first came to Idaho in 1939, and returned in 1940 and 1941. He later made Ketchum his permanent home and died there in 1961.
