Remarks:
Title supplied by Inventory cataloger.
The artist, Cass Gilbert, had a long association with Ridgefield and was involved in efforts to preserve and beautify the town's Main Street. He not only designed and donated the fountain, but provided a planting plan and arranged for its permanent maintenance. Its location on a traffic island in the middle of an intersection has made it vulnerable to damage from motor vehicles, and it has been hit repeatedly over the years. As early as 1933 the turtles had to be recast. In May 1988 it was hit by a truck and shattered into 359 pieces, but was reassembled and patched later that year. Unpublished archival materials are housed in the Cass Gilbert Collection of the Ridgefield Historical Society, Ridgefield, CT.
