Description:
Relief affixed to the facade of the Town Hall depicts an unfurled scroll with relief symbols of Clarkstown Township, New York. A triangular form in the center represents Rockland County. Within the triangle is outlined Clarkstown. A montage of symbols within this outline includes a Dutch settler, Indian Chief Nanuet, local farm produce of corn, apples and grapes, an ice saw, typical of those used in the local ice industry, a gavel and the year 1791, which is the Town's date of origin. Also included are two lines which represent the Palisades Parkway and the New York Thruway. A pair of American flags, partially obscured by the triangular form, appears on each side. The flag on the left has fifty stars and the flag on the right has thirteen stars.

Remarks:
Commissioned by the Bicentennial Committee of the Town of Clarkstown with additional funding from an "America the Beautiful" grant. The sculpture received revarnishings in Nov. 1977, Oct. 1978 and May 1981. From Oct. to April, 1991, the piece was removed and fully restored under the supervision of the sculptor. It was later revarnished with a coating which shredded off within three years. IAS files contain an image of the sculpture in its original form, Town meeting minutes dated July 29, 1975, letterhead from the Bicentennial Committee which incorporated the sculpture's image and correspondence between the artist and the Town concerning maintenance issues, including original instructions for care and maintenance. IAS files also contain related articles from the Journal-News (Rockland County, New York), July 1, 1976 and July 6, 1976.
