Remarks:
Robert Smalls (1839-1915) was born an enslaved African American in Beaufort and later became a Civil War hero, a state Senator and a U.S. Congressman. IAS files include an excerpt from "South Carolina's Blacks and Native Americans," a publication of the State's Human Affairs Commission, Dr. Marianna W. Davis, Chairperson, 1976.
