    Remarks:
The monument commemorates Civil War soldiers and was originally dedicated on July 15, 1898. It was sponsored by the Confederate Association and the United Daughters of the Confederacy and cost of $1,500. Elberton's first granite finishing plant Elberton Granite and Marble Works was built for the sole purpose of completing the monument. The monument was originally twenty-two feet high, with another soldier figure ("Dutchy" by Arthur Beter, IAS record GA000387) atop it. The original solider was unpopular because of its appearance. It was replaced by the current soldier, the monument base heightened by ten feet, and the "new" memorial rededicated on April 19, 1905.
IAS files contain articles from The Elberton Star, July 22, 1898, pg. 1, 3-4; and from Southern Living (Sept. 1983), pg. 18ga. IAS files also contain excerpts from: Frank M. McKenney's "The Standing Army," Alpharetta, GA: WH Wolfe Associates, 1993, pg. 56-58; and Isabell Smith Buzzett's "Confederate Monuments of Georgia," Atlanta: Atlanta Chapter No. 18 United Daughters of the Confederacy, 1984, pg. 18. IAS files contain a brochure from the Elberton Granite Association entitled "The Rise and Fall of Dutchy," which includes historic photographs of the monument with the original soldier atop it.
