    Description: 
    A long relief panel is inset vertically on the face of a tapered stele. The panel contains figures representing the pioneers, buffalo hunters and surveyors headquartered at Fort Griffin who opened West Texas to Anglo-American settlement.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was erected by the State of Texas with $2,500 in federal funds in commemoration of one hundred years of Texas independence. The stele marks the site of Fort Griffin, once a calvary base and pioneer trading post. Page & Southerland were the architects. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Harold Schoen's "Monuments Erected by the State of Texas to Commemorate the Centenary of Texas Independence," Austin: Commission of Control for Texas Centennial Celebrations, 1938.
