Remarks:
Sculpture was paid for by the federal government, erected under the terms of a bill introduced by Congressman Conrad G. Selvig of Crookston. In 1863, near the site, the chiefs of the Pembina and Red Lake tribes signed the Old Crossing Treating, ceding about three million acres of Chippewa land in North West Minnesota and Northeast North Dakota. IAS files contain transcription of nearby plaque; and excerpt from Moira F. Harris' "Monumental Minnesota," St. Paul, MN: Pogo Press, 1992, pg. 42-43.
