A full-length, robed Father Marquette. He is standing in a forward stride with his robes flowing back as if he is moving. Both of his hands are upraised. He holds a feathered peace pipe in his proper right hand. A plain cross hangs around his neck.

Three-quarter scale statue of Father Jacques Marquette, the French Jesuit missionary priest, who in 1673 along with explorer Louis Joliet, were the first Europeans to enter what is now Illinois. IAS files contain copies of the St. Louis Post Dispatch (Feb. 24, 1992, pg. 1, 6) and the Hannibal Courier-Post (May 24, 1991) discussing the artist and commissioning history of this piece, which cost 27,000 dollars.
