Description:
A crucifixion with Jesus on the cross. The full-length, standing figures of Mary and the Apostle John flank the cross. Jesus is depicted wearing a crown of thorns and a cloth about his midsection, with spikes through his hands and feet. A placard is nailed to the upper section of the cross. Mary stands to the proper right of Jesus. Her hands are clasped in prayer, and she is wearing a hooded robe. On the other side of the cross stands John, who wears shoulder-length hair, is dressed in a full-length robe and clasps his hands in prayer. The crucifixion and figures are set atop a plain altar.

Remarks:
Sculpture and original altar donated by Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Kroeger in honor of Mrs. Kroeger's mother, Mary F. Smith. A new altar was constructed by Robert L. Rutherford in 1984 to replace the original, which had been damaged by weather. The open-air altar recalls the missionaries of the Indian and pioneer period. IAS files contain related material from Mike Rutherford, "St. Michaels on the Hill," N.p., 1986, pg. 41.
