Description:
A tapered, four-sided shaft topped by a cross. The shaft is decorated with bas-relief birds and a "Tree of Life" motif, carved in Celtic design. The sculpture is mounted on a hexagonal, three-stepped base.

The idea for the cross originated in the early 1930s with Reverend Arthur Ketchum of St. Matthew's Parish. IAS files contain related excerpts from Thatchey T. P. Luquer's "An Historical Sketch of St. Matthew's Church 1694-1938," Bedford, NY: Katouch Record Press, pg. 57; the booklet "A Sesquicentennial History of St. Matthew's Protestant Episcopal Church," Bedford, N. Y., pg. 25, 51-52; and a 1992 fact sheet from the town's historian.
