    Remarks:
Enrico Manfrini designed the doors and overpanel with a three-fold intent: the overall design is a monument to Christian prayer; the figures are a monument to the Catholic faith; the overall detail is a monument to the spirit of freedom, ecumenical concern, and the human family. The overpanel depicts "humanity through various stages of civilization in pursuit of the Kingdom of God under the guidance of the risen Christ." For local reference, the artist included St. Clare (the patroness of Santa Clara Valley) and St. Francis (the patron of San Francisco). Belluschi and Nervi served as design consultants. IAS files contain a booklet titled "A History of St. Mary's Cathedral," San Francisco: SNCO, 1993; and a related brochure.
