MARTIN (On rear of plinth:) ELZIRE PLANTE unsigned Description:  Two identical figures of St. Martin flank the entryway to the cemetery. St. Martin stands, dressed in armor, wearing a helmet with a crest, a decorated breastplate, an epaulet on his exposed proper right shoulder and a cloak. He holds a fold of the cloak with his proper left hand and rips it with the dagger he holds in his proper right hand. The figure is mounted on a rectangular gatepost. Subject:  Religion -- Saint -- St. Martin Object -- Weapon -- Dagger Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- New Hampshire -- Somersworth Sculpture Owner:  Administered by St. Martin's Church, 120 Maple Street, Somersworth, New Hampshire 03878 Located Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cemetery Road entrance, Somersworth, New Hampshire Remarks:  The two sculptures were part of an original group of approximately twenty pieces that were imported from Italy (probably by the Carron Company), and erected in the cemetery around 1937-1938. There were three, possibly four St. Martin figures. Two were initially placed on St. Martin Street. When St. Martin Street was closed, around 1958-1959, the figures were removed and placed in storage. In the early 1970s, when new gateway entrance posts were built, the figures were removed from storage and placed atop the gateway posts. Automobile accidents in 1993 and again in 1995, damaged the sculptures, and two replacement St. Martin statues were erected. References:  Save Outdoor Sculpture, New Hampshire survey, 1994.
