    Description: 
    A seated figure of Joseph speaking to the child Jesus, who stands before him. Joseph has a full beard and wavy hair which is long at the sides and cropped at the nape of the neck. He wears sandals and an apron which is tied at the back of the neck and flows in folds over his knees. He has bare shoulders, back and arms. Joseph's proper right arm rests on the beam on which he sits. His proper left arm is wrapped around the figure of Jesus, with his proper left hand on Jesus's back. The figure of Jesus stands facing him. Jesus wears a loincloth and has wavy hair which is long at the sides and cropped close at the nape of the neck. Jesus's proper left hand lightly touches Joseph's proper left leg just above the knee. Carpenter tools are on a nearby beam. The sculpture is placed in the center of a circle of mortared river stones of varying colors. The stones are encircled by a sidewalk and the area is lighted.

    Inscription on nearby marker reads: JOSEPH, GENTLE SAINT/PROTECTOR OF JESUS, EVER WATCHFUL, EVER LOVING, EVER CARING/THIS STATUE IS DEDICATED TO THE FIRST/SISTERS OF SAINT JOSEPH WHO IN 1902/IN THE 'MANNER OF JOSEPH' BEGAN THE/HEALING MINISTRY IN ST. JOSEPH'S/HOSPITAL AND TO ALL HOSPITAL PERSONNEL/WHO YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW/WITNESS BY THEIR CARING PRESENCE THE/HEALING MINISTRY OF JESUS/SCULPTOR, W.D. HOPEN OF SUTTON, WEST VIRGINIA/SPRING 1988. IAS files contain a copy of the dedication program. The statue was commissioned by St. Joseph's Hospital. Prior to its June dedication, it was on special exhibit at the Stifel Fine Art Center in Wheeling.
