Only two soldiers were able to escape the massacre. The remains of the soldiers were buried in vaults at St. Augustine National Cemetery in February of 1836. Troops at St. Francis Barracks, next to the cemetery, installed the pyramids, which were dedicated on August 14, 1842. There is a bronze tablet on one of the pyramids that was attached during the 1920s.
