    Description: 
    Full-length figure of a uniformed Union soldier stands on an ornate pedestal and rough-hewn base. The figure wears a long caped coat, cap and moustache. He holds his rifle in front of him with both hands around the barrel and the butt at his feet. A bayonet and cartridge box can be seen on his belt. Relief elements on the base include emblems for the Womens Relief Corps on the south face and Grand Army of the Republic on the west face.

    Remarks: 
    Erected by the Burdick Post No. 3, the Burdick Corps No. 38, Womens Relief Corps and the Department of Minnesota Grand Army of the Republic. The sculpture was restored in the spring of 1989 by Carl Peterson, Barney Reed and Milton Lund, all of Spring Valley. Mr. Peterson repaired the leaning soldier and restored the gun, Mr. Reed did the cement work and repaired the deteriorating base and Mr. Lund reinstalled the work at the cemetery. The repair work was funded by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. IAS files contain a related article from the Spring Valley Tribune, May 28, 1989.
