Description:
The memorial is a bust of Henry Clay Work depicted with a handlebar moustache and long beard which is parted at his chin. The bust is mounted upon a rough-finished base.

Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates Henry Clay Work, 1832-1884, a Middletown native and self-taught musician who wrote "Marching Through Georgia," a song that became a Civil War favorite. His other Civil War songs include "Kingdom's Coming" and "God Save the Nation." When the monument was installed, South Green was known as Union Park. For related reading see Mildred C.
