    Provenance:
Formerly located Kanei-ji Temple, Tokyo Japan
    Remarks:
Hollyhock crests on the lantern are those of the Tokugawa family, which provided Japan's shogun rulers for two and a half centuries. The lantern was dedicated during the reign of Empo in memory of the fourth Tolugawa shogun, Genyuin, who died in 1680 and who's posthumous Buddhist name is Ietsuna. Formerly located at the temple Kanei-ji in Tokyo, where it remained at least until 1868. In 1958, Mr. Shoichi Sumida, president of the Kure Ship-building and Engineering Company, shipped the lantern and three others to Mr. D. E. Taylor, president of the West India Fruit and Steamship Company of West Palm Beach as thankyou gifts to the four Taylor brothers, who were partners in the company. On extended loan from the South Florida Science Museum since 1977. IAS files contain a related article.
